Windows in the Winter

What to look for:
First look for any visual signs that your windows are wasting heat. Notice any cracks in the seal, deteriorating caulk, or any misalignment from the pane to the sill. Next, put your hand close to the bottom of the window: does it feel drastically colder than the temperature of the center of the room? Can you feel a draft? If so, not only is heat escaping, but worse, the cold is getting in. This could also be an indicator that other elements aside from the wind are sneaking in. Perhaps water is also squeezing into any insufficient seals, which can lead to the growth of mold or mildew. As Maryland’s Fall has been particularly damp this year, now might be the perfect time to determine if your windows are ready to handle the incoming winter.
